The Brief

GEMS commissioned ROW.D to document a donation handover to Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria — a key provincial catchment hospital serving the broader Gauteng region and one of South Africa’s most significant academic medical institutions. The donation focused on practical infrastructure improvements directly impacting the hospital’s daily operations and the dignity of patients and clinical staff: the renovation and installation of 170m² of vinyl flooring at the emergency entrance, the installation of a kitchenette for doctors’ rooms, and the installation of blinds for the reception area and CEO’s office.

The event included a formal media briefing followed by a hospital walkthrough led by the Chief Executive Officer, and was attended by the GEMS Principal Officer and a GEMS Board Trustee — underscoring the institutional significance of the initiative and its alignment with GEMS’s broader public healthcare support objectives.

The Challenge
A two-day production at a functioning academic hospital required careful coordination with hospital management and communications teams to ensure filming did not disrupt clinical operations, patient care, or staff routines. POPIA compliance was central to every filming decision — governing what could be captured in shared hospital spaces, how patients and visitors in frame were managed, and how the footage was handled in post-production.
The media briefing format — a structured, formal event with senior stakeholders — also required professional event coverage capability: clean audio capture of speeches and statements, multi-angle footage of proceedings, and the discretion to operate within a formal institutional environment without creating disruption.
What ROW.D Delivered
ROW.D covered the full two-day production at Steve Biko Academic Hospital — managing media briefing coverage on the first day and B-roll filming of the donated infrastructure, hospital environment, and stakeholder interactions on the second. The team maintained full POPIA compliance throughout both shoot days, working within the hospital's operational constraints while capturing the footage needed to tell the story of the initiative fully and accurately.
Post-production shaped the material into a 3-minute corporate responsibility film that communicates the significance of GEMS's investment, the professionalism of the stakeholder relationships involved, and the practical impact the donated infrastructure will have on the hospital's staff and patients. The final video was delivered across GEMS's standard CSI reporting, stakeholder communications, and internal presentation channels.
What This Project Demonstrates
ROW.D's experience in producing multi-day corporate responsibility productions in functioning South African public healthcare facilities, with full media briefing coverage capability, POPIA compliance, and the professionalism required to operate effectively alongside senior institutional leadership. Steve Biko Academic Hospital is the fourth confirmed GEMS production in the ROW.D portfolio — across three provinces and four distinct CSI initiatives — reflecting a sustained and trusted production relationship with one of South Africa's most significant medical aids.
