BRIEF

The Brief

GEMS — the Government Employees Medical Scheme and South Africa’s second largest medical aid — needed to update its safety and induction content for both internal staff and external visitors following significant process changes introduced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. New building access protocols, sign-in procedures, and workplace safety requirements had been implemented across the GEMS head office, and these needed to be communicated clearly, consistently, and professionally to everyone entering the building.

GEMS commissioned ROW.D to translate these updated procedures into a series of professional video assets that would serve multiple functions simultaneously — staff training and onboarding, ongoing safety awareness for employees, and continuous playback in the GEMS head office lobby as a visible, accessible reference point for visitors and contractors.

The Challenge
Workplace safety and compliance videos carry a specific communication challenge: they must be clear and precise enough to convey procedural information accurately, while being engaging enough that the audience actually watches and retains the content. Generic, poorly produced safety videos are frequently ignored — which defeats the entire purpose of producing them. The additional requirement for a lobby-ready export meant the content also needed to work without audio, in an environment where it would loop continuously throughout the working day.
What ROW.D Delivered
ROW.D managed the full production process from scriptwriting through to final delivery. The script was developed to translate complex procedural content into plain, accessible language — structured around the viewer's natural progression through the building from entry to workstation. On-location filming captured all relevant areas of the GEMS head office across a 2-day shoot, with professional lighting, sound, and direction ensuring the footage held quality across all three export formats.
Post-production included editing across three separate deliverable lengths — a full 10-minute training version for formal onboarding sessions, a condensed 6-minute version for ongoing staff refreshers, and a 3-minute TV export optimised for continuous lobby playback. Each version was independently edited to work as a standalone piece, not simply cut down from the previous one.
Voice over, sound design, titles, subtitles, and colour grading were applied consistently across all three videos — ensuring a unified, professional visual identity that reflected the GEMS brand while clearly communicating the content.
What This Project Demonstrates
ROW.D's capability to manage complex multi-deliverable productions from a single brief — handling scriptwriting, multi-day filming, and post-production across three distinct video formats simultaneously. This project also demonstrates experience in healthcare and corporate compliance communications, sensitivity to POPIA requirements in a medical environment, and the ability to produce content that performs across training, awareness, and lobby display contexts.
