The Brief
GEMS — South Africa’s second largest medical aid scheme — commissioned ROW.D to document a significant CSI donation handover to Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. Groote Schuur carries immense national significance as the site of the world’s first successful heart transplant, and the donation targeted the hospital’s maternal-fetal unit and maternity ward — one of the highest-pressure clinical environments in the Western Cape’s public healthcare system.
The donation included critical medical equipment and supplies directly impacting patient care: a labour ward mobile ultrasound machine, a point of care creatinine meter, neonatal resuscitators, baby sheets, fleece blankets, pillowcases, baby towels, and the furnishing of dedicated bereavement counselling spaces with comfortable seating, workstations, and curtains to soften the rooms and offer patients and families privacy and dignity during the most difficult moments of their lives.
The event was attended by the Minister of the Department of Public Service and Administration, the Principal Officer of GEMS, and the Chairperson of GEMS — formally cementing the partnership and its role in strengthening public healthcare delivery in South Africa.
The Challenge
At the same time, the final video needed to tell a genuinely moving story — communicating not just the items donated, but the human significance of the partnership and its real-world impact on mothers, newborns, and families navigating the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
What ROW.D Delivered
Post-production shaped the material into a 3-minute corporate responsibility film that communicated the scale and significance of the donation, the stakeholder relationships it represents, and the human impact at its centre. The final video was delivered for use across GEMS's annual CSI reporting, ESG stakeholder communications, internal presentations, and public-facing channels.
